The “Día de los Muertos” or in english “Day of the Death” is a Mexican celebration that comes from the time of the Aztecs before Mexico became a colony of Spain. However this tradition is still celebrated every year on the 2nd of November, where Mexican family and friends gather together to remember the people who died and what those people liked to do and eat.

During this celebration, people decorate with a lot of flowers, skulls and colourful paper, the typical paper is called “Papel Picado” which consists of tissue paper sheets cut into shapes of skulls and bones and flowers.

I was delighted when I was asked to decorate a party with this theme, as it is something that I have seen for years in Mexico and to be able to bring this tradition to Luxembourg was a great honor for me. So as I said before, normally this tradition is celebrated in November, but as we are in Luxembourg and November will be very cold, we created it now in June.

For the party decoration I started by creating an inspiration board on Pinterest, which you can see here, and I decided to focus on the colour paper and flowers. I started creating a lot of paper flowers, like the ones I showed you how to do on this post: DIY Tissue Paper Flowers, and then complement them with some candle holders and papel picado.

To entertain the kids, we had 3 main activities, a skull colouring activity, a piñata in a form of a skull and the decoration of marshmallows in the form of a skull as well.
